Parus atricapillus


And you thought this was a photo of a Black-Capped Chickadee. These small plump birds are very active and inquisitive. They are very abundant during the winter in Calgary. You may hear their song (chick-a-dee-dee-dee) before you actually see them. I shot this photo at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, where they are in abundance. They are easily enticed to land on an outstretched hand that offers a sunflower seed, while you shoot photos of them. Chickadees are non-migratory, staying at low elevations in winter.
