Maligne Canyon

If you are ever in Jasper National Park, Alberta, do not miss a visit to Maligne Canyon. The Maligne River has eaten away at the limestone over the ages, with the result being this smooth steep walled canyon. It is a very dramatic sight and is not to be missed. The Maligne River leaves Maligne Lake as a torrent that flows into Medicine Lake with no visible exit to the lake. Yet when dye was placed in the water it took anywhere from a day to a week for the dye to show up in Maligne Canyon a distance of 10 miles. Very strange. I shot this photo in the summer, however in the winter you actually can enter the canyon and with the aid of crampons, hike on the frozen surface of the river. The canyon is very narrow in places and you feel you could jump across. You better be right as it is 70 feet deep in places
