Spermophilus richardsonii

Tne Richard Ground Squirrel better known as a gopher if you live on the prairies of Alberta or Saskatchewan. The Gopher in my photo was born this spring and may or may not live through summer if he is not attentive to the Red-tailed Hawk that was circling overhead. Gophers feed on a wide variety of plants and their seeds. During the winter this plump bodied Gopher will hibernate in the depth of its burrow. This little guy has one thing in his favour, he was not near a road where they get run over by cars.
