The Beautiful Wood Duck

Life in the Chesapeake Bay

Visiting the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary recently, found me shooting photos of the Wood Ducks that were released into the sanctuary some years back. Wild Wood Ducks not derived from these introduced ones, offer Alberta's birders much more of a challenge - that are uncommonly encountered along wetlands and rivers in the southern part of the province. The male Wood Duck is one of the most colorful water birds in North America, and its image can be found in books, magazines and calenders. It is easily seen why when you observe this most beautiful water bird. Check them out sometime.

I had to laugh when I saw this male Wood Duck courting the female Mallard who was playing hard to get
